Many learners with difficulties can qualify for and benefit from exam access arrangements (EAA) – special arrangements put in place during examinations which enable learners to be ‘on a level playing field’ with their peers, minimising any disadvantage and ensuring equity.
Examples of EAA are:
• 25% or 50% extra time
• Scribe or use of a word processor
• Reader or computer reader/reader pen
In order to qualify for EAA, learners need to demonstrate eligibility which is established through the administration of standardised assessments. Assessments for EAA can only be administered from Year 9 onwards although assessments can be administered and qualitative observations can be used for the purpose of establishing ‘normal way of working’ before this. Ideally, EAA assessments should not be left until Year 11 as it is important that learners become accustomed to sitting class tests, assessments and mock examinations with their EAA already established and practised.
