Specialist Help in Education offers parents a bespoke impartial and confidential advice service. Using experience gained whilst working as a teacher of children and young people with SEND, a SENDCo, assistant educational psychologist, Education Officer for a Local Authority and, more recently, as a dyslexia assessor and tutor, this service can help parents and carers navigate the sometimes complicated terrain involved in advocating for your child or young person with SEND. Specialist Help in Education can provide support and advise on appropriate ‘next steps’ when dealing with schools and/or local authorities.
Specialist Help in Education has many years of experience in the role of SENDCo and offers SENDCo services to schools and colleges.
This may take the form of providing temporary short or long-term cover during SENDCo absence or providing temporary SENDCo support to establish and/or develop systems, policies, procedures, paperwork, training, and/or day-to day general SEND duties.
This may include, but is not limited to:
Identifying Needs: Observing students, coordinating and administering assessments, and tracking progress to recognise learning difficulties, behavioural challenges, or disabilities as early as possible.
Coordinating Support: Writing and monitoring individualised learning plans and contributing to targets and outcomes for children and young people with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Supporting Staff: Advising and training teachers and teaching assistants on the best strategies to help students with SEND thrive in the classroom.
Liaising with Parents: Acting as the main point of contact for families, keeping them informed of their child’s progress, and ensuring their insights are integrated into the child’s learning plan.
Managing Specialists: Connecting the school with external professionals like speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, and occupational therapists.
Specialist Help in Education can also provide a SEND Consultancy Service, providing advice and support to schools and colleges who have a SENDCo and would benefit from additional support.
Services can include:
Whole School Support: Providing knowledge and expertise to help schools navigate SEND policies, developing and strategic planning of SEND policies, documentation review, embedding SEND across the school, providing guidance on EHCP processes and ensuring OFSTED compliance in relation to SEND and the SEND Code of practice.
Supporting staff with strategic planning, assessing complex cases, mentoring and coaching new SENDCos, helping them to develop sustainable systems and to avoid the isolation often associated with the role as well as training teachers on embedding inclusive practices into the curriculum in the classroom setting.
