Specialist Help in Education offers specialist dyslexia teaching and study skills tuition. Children, young people and students do not require a diagnosis of dyslexia to access specialist teaching or study skills tuition.
Specialist teaching can be delivered to children from the age of 7 years (Year 3) and study skills tuition is offered for students from around the age of 14-15 (Year 10) or on commencement of GCSE or equivalent courses. Study skills tutoring is also available to students in further and higher education and other adults in education or undertaking workplace assessments, exams and qualifications. Sessions can be delivered on a one-to-one basis but also in pairs or groups (if children are at similar stages of learning). Group sessions work particularly well within the school setting and do not need to consist of children from the same year group.
Most sessions last one hour and are delivered once a week. This generally works best for most but this can be adjusted and tailored to the needs of the child, young person or student. Older students may prefer sessions of one-and-a-half to two hours.
Specialist dyslexia teaching and study skills tuition can be delivered in the child’s, young person’s or student’s own home or, alternatively, in the school, college or university with the agreement of the educational establishment. Environmental requirements are a desk and two chairs within a reasonably quiet, well-lit space where teaching can be delivered relatively undisturbed. It can be delivered during the normal school day within school, college or university, or alternatively, and subject to availability, after school and occasionally at weekends and/or school holidays in the person’s own home.
Specialist dyslexia teaching and study skills tuition is generally delivered in 6 week or half-termly ‘blocks’ and paid for in advance of the beginning of the first session of a ‘block’ of teaching.
Specialist Dyslexia Teaching aims to fill the ‘gaps’ in the child’s or young person’s phonological knowledge and awareness, and employs multi-sensory methods alongside evidence-based literacy programmes which are ‘mixed and matched’ with bespoke and personalised materials and resources. Sessions include instruction and practice in a range of literacy skills, such as reading, spelling and writing as well as working memory and verbal expression. Each session is designed to build on the previous session, and focuses on a range of skills which the child or young person requires in order to be able to make progress in literacy. Strategies, tips and tricks are shared and learners are strongly encouraged to practise further at home between sessions to ensure momentum is maintained.
Study skills tuition aims to promote independence in learning and self-study at a higher level. It may focus on some aspects of literacy but will always include development of essential skills required for learning at a higher level with a focus on organisation, time-management, dealing with information, conducting research, checking and proofreading work, revision and memory, exams, seminars, group work and presentations in the context of studying with a specific learning difficulty (SpLD).
